The first trailer for Star Wars Episode 9: The Rise of Skywalker is finally here. The long-anticipated trailer was released, along with its title, at a Star Wars convention in Chicago as director J.J. Abrams and the Lucasfilm president, Kathleen Kennedy, presented the announcement on Friday. “Abrams returned to direct, after helming 2015’s The Force Awakens, although he wasn’t the first choice of director,” said Dan Auty.

The trailer starts off with Rey in the desert, which could be Tatooine or some other new world. It appears she is ready to have a standoff with Kylo and his TIE interceptor. Pulling out Luke’s light saber and running from the TIE interceptor while dodging laser blasts, we are able to hear Luke’s voice, which means he will be back in some sort of way, most likely as a force ghost. He says “We’ve passed on all we know…” which means all the Jedi have passed down their knowledge from generation to generation to Rey, telling her this is her fight.

Then we see an unfamiliar planet that seems to be full of life and vegetation and lights. We get a clip of Kylo killing some soldier, using his red light saber with the Order behind him and to his side. Some unknown person, which could be Kylo, puts back Kylo’s helmet back together, welding it back. It could be Kyber crystal putting it back together to give it more power.

Then we see some clips of Finn and Po standing in the desert, possibly looking for Rey and we see BB8 and some new drone and then Lando, Chewie, and the Falcon going into hyperspace.

We see a battle in the desert, possibly the same desert that Rey, Finn, and Poe are in, with speeders and some rebels. You see Po and C3PO dodging blasts on some sort of land vehicle in the same desert. This whole time Luke is saying “… We will always be with you, no one is ever really gone…” This proves that there are more than one or two force ghosts that are communicating with Rey.

Seeing the scene with Princess Leia and Rey hugging as Rey cries is also a heartbreaking sight, as we know Carrie Fisher passed away in 2016. As we hear Luke finish his sentence “…No one is ever really gone…” we see all the characters, Chewie, C3PO, BB8, Finn, Rey, and Po gathered in some grasslands. Now, what happens next shocked many Star Wars fans, as they were looking over a wild and stormy sea at a massive piece of the second Death Star having crashed into the sea on a currently unknown planet. Logic would dictate that it is the actual planet of Endor.

Immediately after we hear Emperor Palpatine’s disturbing and ominous laugh, a soundbite of one of his laughs from a previous movie. This, however, does not imply that he’s not actually in it as Palpatine’s actor, Ian McDirmand, and director J.J. Abrams confirmed that the Emporer will make an appearance in episode IX in some capacity.
