Marvel, like always, has played their cards exactly right to reach maximum results with their biggest entry to date. The long anticipated Avengers 4 was finally given its title which has been kept under wraps since its announcement but first footage in the form of a teaser trailer.

Avengers: Endgame released its first footage on December 7th just as fan excitement reached its absolute peak. Within 24 hours the trailer had accumulated over 289 million views, making it the most viewed trailer in history.

The trailer, despite revealing very little and playing it very close to the chest, did not disappoint. It opens with Tony Stark stranded in deep space after the events of The Decimation (the official name given to Thanos’ snap at the end of Avengers: Infinity War which wiped out, as Black Widow puts it, 50% of all living creatures) recording a voice memo for his newly-made wife, Pepper Pots, into the helmet of his badly damaged nano-tech helmet. From there the trailer continues but does not get much brighter.

There is no hope to be found in the familiar faces of our original Avengers as the effects of what Thanos did have been brought full circle. Despite a current run-time of an estimated three hours, the fans seem very ready to be stressed and depressed beyond belief as hype for an Avengers film has never been higher.

With so many pieces of the puzzle missing and next to no hope, the trailer sets us up for a very different marvel experience this time around. The tables finally seem fully stacked against the heroes, with such a grand scale of loss and the very real world fact that many actor’s contracts finally up, fans stand to lose most of their favorite characters.

This is truly the end, as Avengers: Endgame snaps into theaters on April 26, 2019. Was that too soon? Sorry….
